30 Jan Noteworthy: Great Falls, Montana’s annual the Russell art auction returns March 20 – 22
inAn anticipated annual event for Western art collectors and enthusiasts, The Russell: A Western Art Experience auction will feature over 125 historic pieces — including more than 20 works by the iconic Charles M. Russell — presenting the largest sale of historic Western art in the C.M. Russell Museum’s 57-year auction history and one of the most considerable C.M. Russell auction events internationally in the past two decades.
“With over 20 Russell works spanning paintings, sculptures, and drawings, this sale offers collectors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add a Russell to their collection,” says C.M. Russell Museum Director of Art and Philanthropy Duane Braaten, who worked with leading art consignors to organize the event. “The Russell 2025 will be a must-attend event for anybody who collects Western art.”

The works of many of Russell’s notable contemporaries will also be up for auction, including O.C. Seltzer, Joseph Henry Sharp, Edgar S. Paxson, Maynard Dixon, Henry Farny, Edward Borein, and Eanger Irving Couse. “Thanks to the incredible consignment by the family of Sam and Elaine Rosenthal,” continues Braaten, “this year’s auction features not only exceptional Russell works, but also the most comprehensive collection of his contemporaries we’ve ever offered.”
The auction is the culmination of Western Art Week in Great Falls, Montana, which offers an enticing lineup of additional events for anyone who loves Western art and lifestyle, including First Strike, Art in Action, and an educational symposium.
Proceeds from The Russell support the C.M. Russell Museum’s mission to celebrate Russell’s art, life, and legacy; the art of his contemporaries; and all Western and Indigenous art and culture that reflects his spirit.
