Round Up: Timeless Retreat

Sanctuary: Homes and Resorts is among ORO Editions’ latest books to explore inspired architecture and design. The book features 16 projects by de Reus Architects, in such locations as Hawaii, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. Each project explores the interplay between nature, craft, and the firm’s pursuit of timeless architecture.

With essays by architect Mark de Reus and critic and design theorist Joseph Giovannini, Sanctuary provides readers with an in-depth understanding of how the spirit of place contributes to design thinking. Words are illustrated by photography that showcases the design practice. As a follow-up to the firm’s first book, Tropical Experience: Architecture + Design (ORO Editions, 2011), Sanctuary explores a wide range of buildings that are both timeless and luxurious.

“A well-crafted sanctuary offers more than refuge and shelter from the chaos of the world,” de Reus writes. “It is a personal monastery where the mind unwinds and recharges. It is where we tend to be ourselves, and where we unearth creative inspiration. It is, by definition, a sacred place — somewhere life can be supported and nurtured, where the human soul can thrive.”

With offices in Sun Valley, Idaho, Maui, and Hawaii, de Reus Architects is led by de Reus, Dan Dzakowic, Louis Kaufman, John Rowland, and Christopher Strahle. Founded in 2005, the firm is dedicated to creating luxury homes and destinations across a broad range of climates and geographies. The architects pursue an intimate approach to design, exploring client aspirations, location, and culture to inspire meaningful and respectful architecture.
