05 Oct Round Up: The Trevilian Collection
inIt was June 11, 1864, and the Confederate cavalry under General Thomas Rosser, a native of Texas and General George Custer’s former West Point classmate, surrounded Custer and his men at Trevilian Station, Virginia. After the ensuing, six-hour battle, Custer’s wagon was captured, and his personal items were sent back to Texas as war trophies.
The Trevilian Collection has remained intact, and has changed hands only a few times before it was acquired by Cisco’s Gallery in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The collection includes Custer’s wedding uniform, travel bags, field desk, and presentation sword, which was made by Tiffany’s and presented by the 5th of Michigan Cavalry on June 29, 1863.
Over the past 15 years, the collection has traveled between the Custer Battlefield, Monroe County Historical Society, and the Civil War Museum. Cisco’s will have the collection on display this fall. Free and open to the public, reservations are required:
