Design Elements: By Western Hands: Preserving the Legacy of Western Design

With the goal of building a design hub to house an Education and Training Center, a Western Design Museum, and a Member Gallery, the Cody, Wyoming-based organization By Western Hands has set out to “promote artisans through events and related activities that help sustain the creation of decorative and functional art using designs and techniques influenced by the American West.”

Through a stand-alone structure, they hope to develop a multi-tiered curriculum with apprenticeships and adult education in different areas of functional Western art design. Members will be able to showcase and sell featured works through the Member Gallery. As a destination for Cody, the museum will be dedicated to preserving the legacy of Western design with permanent and revolving exhibits that will include photographs and master works from institutions and private collections. The By Western Hands Invitational Design Exhibition has taken place each September during the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Rendezvous Royale week. For more information, bywesternhands.org.
