Round Up: Noteworthy: Montana Ballet Company hires general manager with funds from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust

Edna Mae Berkey has joined Montana Ballet Company as its general manager, taking on a newly created position that the organization hopes will enhance operations and support continued growth across its performance, training, and community engagement programs.

Founded in 1984, Montana Ballet Company is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to presenting world-class performances, offering high-quality dance training, and providing meaningful access to the arts through education and outreach. Based in Bozeman, Montana Ballet serves more than 400 academy dancers annually and reaches thousands of community members through performances and partnerships.

Berkey brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit arts administration, operations, and financial management, with previous leadership roles at Charlotte Ballet, Ballet Memphis, and the Chautauqua Institution. She holds a degree in arts administration from The Ohio State University and is known for her strategic approach, collaborative style, and deep commitment to the performing arts.

As general manager, Berkey will oversee financial and operational systems, manage contracts, support human resources and compliance functions, and provide high-level organizational leadership alongside the artistic director.

The creation of the general manager role addresses a critical staffing need and reflects the organization’s continued programmatic and financial growth. Montana Ballet has tripled its operating budget over the past decade, added new performances and educational programs, and significantly expanded its academy and professional company offerings.

The newly created position was made possible through a capacity-building grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. “The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust’s support is a powerful investment in the future of the arts in Montana,” says Board Chair Margaret Perryman. “It enables us to build the infrastructure we need to thrive, not just today but for years to come.”
