Round Up: Best of the West: Gifts of the Season

White Bear Moccasins

Shauna White Bear’s moccasins blend traditional Indigenous craftsmanship with contemporary flair. The durable mocs are crafted from bison leather and customized based on the wearer’s taste with fur, decorative rivets, and lace. White Bear, who lives in Bozeman, Montana, is an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation and seeks to motivate younger generations to stay authentic and unique. She recruits Indigenous college students to assist her in the art of moccasin making, fostering an environment of integrity and dedication to the craft. “I hope to inspire young people to use their talents wisely and take control of their lives,” she says.

Model 3 – The Regulator by Dave Berghold

Dave Berghold of Bozeman, Montana’s The Last Wind-Up recently released an exclusive timepiece in celebration of his 35 years in business. The Model 3 is inspired by the precision of observatory and master clocks and remains true to its regulator-watch legacy as a reference timekeeper. Unlike original watches, the hour and second hands are positioned in separate subdials while the minute hand remains centrally located, allowing for legibility and precise readings. The movement is achieved through a top-grade Swiss Sellita SW266-1 encased with blued-steel screws and housing 31 jewels and a 41-hour power reserve. It includes an intricately engraved silver Guilloche dial, is crowned with a Yogo sapphire from the Little Belt Mountains of Montana, and is finished with a caiman crocodile leather strap.

Fly Box by A.L. Swanson

A.L. Swanson’s wooden fly boxes embody elegance and utility. Made of fine hardwoods featuring shell inlay and mixed metals, these boxes go beyond the typical storage container to celebrate the art of fly fishing. An avid angler himself, Swanson was born in Portland, Maine and learned woodwork under the tutelage of some of New England’s finest craftsmen. In 2000, he ventured west and now works from his studio in the foothills of the Northern Rockies in Helena, Montana, where he creates high-end furniture and wooden fly gear, including fly boxes, rod tubes, and landing nets. In 2014, Swanson submitted his work to the Orvis Company, which subsequently featured his fly boxes on three of their four catalog covers that year. “Obviously, his boxes are a work of art,” says Christine Penn, merchandise coordinator and analyst at Orvis. “I think attention to detail, finish, abalone caps over the magnet closures, inset hinges — all make these superior to any other wooden fly box I’ve ever seen.”

The True Board

An innovative design for a daily kitchen item, The True Board elevates the classic cutting board’s everyday functionality. With four feet that raise the cutting surface up off the counter, this board made of certified plantation-grown teak allows you to level and unlevel it based on your use. The perimeter groove collects juices and, when angled, those juices run directly into the accompanying stainless steel bowl for a seamless cleanup. A strong earth magnet on the side offers a handy place to rest a knife in between carving and prep work, keeping it off the table and safely out of the way.

Nature’s Accent Table by Core Elements Studio

Dakota Meeks of Core Elements Studio sources reclaimed wood throughout Montana for each of her custom, handcrafted statement pieces. Working from her studio in Bozeman, Montana, Meeks blends artistry with intention through a process that she says “begins with listening — to my clients, to the wood, to the story waiting to be shaped.” Each of Meeks’ pieces is borne of nature’s core elements — earth, fire, water, wood, metal, and air — and is a fusion of function and art. “It solves a need, reflects a soul, and carries a bit of natural imperfection — because that’s where the beauty lives,” Meeks says.
