Montana Painter’s Alliance – Various Artists

June 30 – August 6, 2016

The Montana Painter’s Alliance is comprised of thirty of the most accomplished and esteemed artists from every corner of the state with their focus being on encouraging and fostering excellence among the state’s professional painters in plein air, studio and landscape painting. Members will present premier works in oil, watercolor, pastel and mixed media that most clearly exemplify each artists’ individual style and approach to painting. These plein air works will be hung salon style in the Hockaday’s main galleries, encompassing a range of sizes from miniatures to large paintings. 

 

Encounters – Nancy Erickson

July 28 – September 10, 2016

Livingston, MT artist Nancy Erickson is a nationally recognized fiber artist. Her artwork recognizes the individual dignity of wild creatures, often juxtaposing them with people or human environments. This exhibition features her large-scale, free-form textile composition, which were inspired by the cave art found at Chauvet Pont d’Arc and Lascaux in France.

 

Elizabeth Lochrie: Woman Alone in her Way 

August 4 – October 8, 2016

The Hockaday Museum of Art is proud to present a biography exhibit on Elizabeth Lochrie, one of the artists featured in the 2015 A Timeless Legacy – Women Artists of Glacier National Park. Elizabeth Lochrie is celebrated for her incisive, well observed, and affectionate portraits of Native Americans. Throughout her career, she painted more than 1000 portraits of specific people from the Native community, creating a unique historical record of Indian life. Paintings from the Museum’s permanent collection will also be featured.

 

A Timeless Legacy – Women Artists of Glacier National Park

August 13 – September 10, 2016

Nationally recognized women artists were invited to participate in the second annual A Timeless Legacy exhibit and sale. Renowned for their work in featuring western subjects, these 27 artists are from all over the United States and have been assembled to create an unprecedented show of works connected to the majesty of Glacier National Park. Both paintings and sculpture are featured with the range of subjects including landscapes, wildlife, and the indigenous people who have called the Park home.

A Timeless Legacy – Women Artists of Glacier National Park Premier Art Event & Sale

Admission: Members/$25, Non-members/$35

Following the overwhelming response to the 2015 exhibition A Timeless Legacy  – Women Artists of Glacier National Park, the Hockaday invited 27 nationally recognized women artists to participate in a Premier Art Event & Sale. These artists are renowned for their work in featuring western subjects and have been assembled to create an unprecedented show of works connected to the majesty of Glacier National Park. The range of subjects includes landscapes, wildlife, and the indigenous people who have called the Park home. A portion of proceeds from painting sales benefits the Hockaday.

Double Visions – Ron and Echo Ukrainetz

September 15 – November 5, 2016

A visual interpretation from two perspectives of the unique history of Montana, with an emphasis on people, events, and the land that made it all happen. The exhibition will cover broad themes, from explorers like Lewis and Clark, the lawlessness of the times, industry, the land, and the people. Depicting landscapes, historical figures, wildlife, and lifestyles, Ron and Echo tell the story in imagery of the vibrant and exciting early days of Montana life.

 

Mystery & Majesty: Native American Rock Art – Lee Silliman

September 15 – October 29, 2016

Curator Lee Silliman’s black and white photographs tap into a few of the literally thousands of chiseled and painted constructions left behind by Native Americans upon boulders and stone walls. Researchers still struggle to untangle the ethnic history of this myriad of artworks.

The Hockaday hosts Great Falls, MT artists Ron and Echo Ukrainetz during the opening reception for their Double Visions exhibition on display throughNovember 5.  Double Visions is a visual interpretation from two perspectives of the unique history of Montana, with an emphasis on people, events, and the land that made it all happen. Curator Lee Silliman also comes up from Missoula for the opening of his black and white photography exhibit of Mystery & Majesty: Native American Rock Art, which will be shown through October 29.

 

Curator Talk with Jennifer Li for Elizabeth Lochrie: Woman Alone in her Way

Artist and Guest Curator Jennifer Li presents the story of Elizabeth Lochrie, one of the pioneering women artists of Glacier National Park.  Jennifer will speak to the selection of paintings in Woman Alone in her Way, an exhibition of Lochrie paintings gifted to the Museum for its permanent collection by her family.
