In 2010, the National Shooting Sports Foundation reported that 11 million meals were served to those in need using donated wild game. If you’ve filled your freezer but still have active tags and a hankering to keep hunting, consider donating your wild game to your local food bank. Although guidelines vary state to state, typically the meat must be legally hunted — no road kill — and processed professionally by a company with up-to-date health inspection credentials.

In Montana, the Hunters Against Hunger program covers all processing fees with designated processors (mfbn.org/). In Idaho and Wyoming, hunters cover the processing fees. For more information, call the Idaho Foodbank at (208) 336-9643, the Montana Food Bank Network at (406) 721-3825, or the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies at (303) 371-9250.
